Veteran's Day, A Tale of Two Wars, Part 2.

Posted by Matt Shalvatis Photography (Kiev, Ukraine) on 11 November 2007 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

There is a second type of war memorial found in Kiev. This is for the wars they would much rather forget. The wars that were not noble, and were not won. The only reason there may be a memorial at all is to placate families that lost loved ones in the process. Given that the defeat in Afghanistan led to the breakup of the Soviet Union, and Ukrainian freedom, it seems a bit surprising there's not a slightly higher profile. But that would go against the rule that the noble warriors, the winning warriors, get the larger than life memorials, and the losers get forgotten.

This Afghan war statue is outside the grounds of the Great Patriotic War Museum park. Most visitors must pass by it to get to the main park grounds.
